Earth Abides
A story of civilization, survival, and the human capacity to adapt.
Civilization can disappear in a matter of days. The world it leaves behind continues.
Through the journey of Isherwood Williams, we explore what happens when the systems that shape human life collapse—and how people learn, connect, and find meaning in the world that follows.
SCENE 01 / 09
The Awakening
The world had changed while Ish slept.
Ish awoke in the mountain cabin, weak from the illness that had nearly taken his life.
Beyond the window, the mountains stood as they always had. Sunlight moved through the trees. The natural world offered no obvious sign that anything had changed.
But Ish had been absent from the world for days.
And while he struggled to recover, something had happened beyond the mountains—something far greater than he could yet imagine.
SCENE 02 / 09
The First Discovery
The world was still there. The people were not.
As Ish made his way back toward civilization, he expected to find the familiar signs of everyday life. Cars moving along the road. People entering shops. Voices carrying through the streets.
Instead, he found silence.
Cars stood unattended. Storefronts remained open, but no one came or went. The buildings, roads, and ordinary objects of daily life were still in place, as though the people who used them had simply vanished.
At first, Ish searched for an explanation. Perhaps the town had been evacuated. Perhaps some emergency had driven everyone elsewhere. But each empty street made those possibilities harder to believe.
Everything looked familiar, yet nothing behaved as he expected.
SCENE 03 / 09
The Realization
The silence finally had an explanation.
Ish searched for answers among the remnants of ordinary life.
Newspapers and abandoned buildings offered fragments of a story he had missed while recovering in the mountains. A deadly epidemic had spread through the population, overwhelming the systems people depended upon.
The empty streets were no longer an isolated mystery. They were evidence of something far greater.
The familiar world had depended on countless people working together. Now the stores, streets, and buildings remained, but the human activity that gave them purpose had largely disappeared.
Ish had survived, but survival had placed him in a world he no longer understood.
